Heave Again!
Oct 18th, 2009 by Omally

Ahhh, weekends are smashing, aren’t they?

Whilst Tammy was out being girly with her chum Amy, I decided to continue with the manly activities started last weekend: to whit I have sorted out the lawn. Actually, given the amount of soily toil involved it should really be The Lawn. Anyway, following a good read of the Readers Digest Complete Library Of The Garden (volume 2 of 3) printed in 1963, I’ve:

dug (seemingly through concrete and ended up with a heavily bent spade)
raked (to a very fine tilth indeed!)
stamped it flat again with a big board (no roller)
cast my seed upon the fertile soil (alright, who sniggered? anyway, it’s Rye Grass in case you wondered) and then I
riddled (oho! yes indeed, I have a Riddle in my shed and I don’t mean Jimmy, although I do make my own compost accelerator…) and finally I
watered the whole lot.
To be repeated next weekend with the other half of the grass-seed, minues the digging and raking.

I’ve also prepared the ground for some smashing little Blueberry bushes wot I bought. These bushes don’t like anything but acid soil. We have acid/neutral soil where I intend to plant them, so they might be alright. To be sure, I’ve dug a gert big hole and filled it with ericaceous compost which I will leave to settle until next weekend before planting the bushes out.

To make some more leaf-mould for next year, I obtained some smashing jute sacks and swept up the first drift of leaves in the car-park: quite amusing that my neighbours think I’m sweeping their parking spaces for them just to be tidy, but really I’m after lots of lovely dead leaves! Still, fringe benefits are not to be sneezed at I suppose.

Finally, I have a load of tulip bulbs (Gavota for those who know - for those who dont, have a look here) which I’m dying to plant out but must resist temptation until mid November because they’re late-flowering! I only know because the lovely lady at our local Garden Centre was kind enough to photocopy a page out of a special Bulbs gardening book.

Next weekend’s missions:
Re-stain the shed and trellis (top right of piccy)
Plant Blueberry bushes
Make some more paper pots ready for next years seedlings!

‹Still has not done anything like as much work today as Tammy, though, and is very grateful indeed for the sparkly clean house!›
